FIRST LEGO League 2025 - School Final
Read all about the Tallaght AWS regional final written by Luka in 6th class!

I came into school early with my team. We got onto the bus at around 9:30. We were all very excited, and nervous too!

We arrived at the venue, the Maldron hotel in Tallaght, and I heard lots of people saying how fancy it was. We went to our pit area, and set it all up. We were one of the first into the judging room. We started our presentation in high spirits, and we all tried our best. We answered all of the judges' questions and left feeling triumphant.

After, we rested at our pit stop and waited for our first robot games. We went over and cheered other teams on until we came over for our game. Our robot game participants were feeling nervous, but we gave them all the encouragement they needed! However, our first session didn’t go as well as we'd like, but that's why we still had another two sessions!
Between games, there was lots of dancing as well.
Our second game was much better and we finished feeling confident. We watched other teams for around 40 mins before our last game. It went really well, and we just rested while waiting for the award ceremony. In the meantime we got our photo taken for the Tallaght Echo!
We didn’t know the ceremony was on so soon, so we only knew it was on because we got called for our medals! Every team got medals, and then we were really excited and nervous, because it was time for the awards. We saw awards given to teams like, best innovation project. Best robot design. And most points scored on the robot game table! The last award was given for the team going to the All-Ireland final! We had a massive leg-drumroll before my team S.O.S was announced! We celebrated furiously, as we had all worked really hard for the moment. We got more photos taken and received a massive trophy.

The other winners from our school were O.C.E.A.N. (Robot Design) and Project W.A.V.E. (Innovation Project). Shoutout to Turseato too!

FIRST LEGO League 2025 - School Final
Read all about our school final written by Lucy in 6th class!

The First Lego League is an international STEM competition. There are 3 parts to it.
-
The robot game, which consists of coding LEGO robots to finish missions by pulling down levers, collecting pieces off the game mat, etc. The points gained by completing missions only count as 25% of the total score.
-
The Robot design is a presentation to judges and a set of slides explaining the development of their robot e.g adding arm extensions to reach higher levers , and adding extra wheels.
-
The Innovation Project is another presentation to judges, which involves picking a world problem to solve with that year's theme. This year’s theme was SUBMERGED. So, we picked a problem based on the seas, like plastic pollution. The slides detail the journey from brainstorm to prototype, also explaining how our solution works.
In our school final, the victors were
‘Project W.A.V.E’, ‘S.O.S’, ‘O.C.E.A.N’ and ‘Octonauts’. Those 4 teams moved on to the Tallaght Final.
Many children found the FLL a very enjoyable and educational journey, and it also helped groups build their teamwork skills and get to know each other better. It helped form new friendships too! If some of our lucky teams succeed they will go to the ALL Ireland Final! Fingers crossed!

FIRST LEGO League 2024 - Team GPS
All Ireland Lego Champions: Mr Smyth, Ms. Dorrepaal and the six girls from GPS travelled to Norway on Monday 13th of May representing Ireland at the First Lego League European Finals. We wish them all the best.

The FIRST LEGO League is a global engineering competition that combines robotics, engineering, and coding with real-world problem solving and team work. As part of the competition, 6 girls from Mr. Smyth's 6th class designed and programmed their own robot. They also identified a problem and used the engineering design cycle and technology in an innovative way to solve it. The girls have worked tirelessly with their research, alongside the other aspects of their project, to achieve the incredible feat of winning the All Ireland finals. The girls are Ava, Caitlin, Hollyann, Mollie, Tara and Kayleigh. Their group name is 'GPS - Girls Play Sport'.
GPS has researched and found that there aren't enough girls of their age playing sports and that girls quit sports at a young age. They have carried out multiple school surveys to over 350 pupils. The girls have also designed a prototype website (to help increase young girls' participation in sport).

This group of remarkable young girls were invited to present their research project in Norway this May at the Open European Championships of the FIRST LEGO League. This is equivalent to the Olympics of the FIRST LEGO League. It is a unique opportunity for these girls to showcase their hard work, research, and contribute meaningfully to the sharing of information surrounding women in sport.

Congratulations!
