Mr. Smyth's class attended a webinar all about engineering. The children learned all about engineering, what an engineer does, and how they work.

Walking up the Laneway

Third Class went on a walk up the Firhouse laneway. We learned all about the history of Tymon Lodge and examined the different trees on the lane.

The Vikings

Mr. Smyth's class have been busy learning all about the Vikings, including the history of Dublin. We went on a virtual tour of Viking Dublin. We stopped at the Dubh Linn Gardens, Dublin Castle, and Fishamble Street. We even learned about the history of Wood Quay and watched historical news reports on the protests there in the 1970s.

Cloud Hunt

Third Class have been learning all about the weather and the different clouds in our atmosphere. Mr. Smyth's class went on a cloud hunt outside. They were able to spot cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds. 

We had great fun!

Magnet Investigations

Third Class have been busy learning about magnets. Mr. Smyth's class came up with their own investigations to test the magnets' strength. They checked to see how many pieces of paper, textbooks, and more it would take for the magnet to stop working. One group found it took over 600 sheets to stop the magnetic force. A hard day's work for sure!

Learning about the Stone Age

Over the past few weeks, Third Class have been learning about the Stone Age. Mr. Smyth's class have really enjoyed using their Chromebooks and various historic sources to learn more about this prehistoric period. The children also examined some Stone Age art and made their own clay pots.

Walking on Air!

As part of Science Week, Mr. Smyth's class tried out an experiment called 'Walking on Air'. The children tested how many children it would take to pop the balloons underneath the table. In the end, we learned that the balloons under the table wouldn't pop, even with 6 children on the table at once!

Halloween Fun!

Mr. Smyth's class have had great Halloween fun this week. 

They read the spooky stories that they wrote in class, played Halloween games in P.E., and even got to dress up on Friday. Check out some photos below.

Fingerprint Investigations

Mr. Smyth’s class have been busy learning about their fingerprints. 

Today, they examined samples of their fingerprints and tested just how important their thumbs are. From ruling copies to picking up lunch boxes, each group tried to see what they could and couldn't do without their thumbs!

STEM Challenge

Mr. Smyth’s class went head-to-head in an engineering design challenge.

Each group tried to make the longest paper chain, using only one glue stick, one pair of scissors, and a single sheet of A4 paper.
